It's a busy time of year, and we're all busy people. Have there been things going on you want to get sorted out? Want to figure out just who your character was claiming to be a god to during the eclipse? Want to talk about your character's totally legal job(s)? JARRING JAMJAR

It happens in an instant.

Maybe you were walking. Maybe you were fighting. Maybe you were sleeping.

Wherever you were, you're suddenly assaulted by a loud, shrill ringing in your ears, in your head. The sound pounds into the back of your skull and penetrates your mind, leaving you paralyzed in agony.

It's over in a few seconds, though those seconds might have felt like hours.

And then you wake up.

The sky above you is dark and roiling with clouds. The ground below you is cold and hard, like concrete. If you look down, you'll see symbols in a language you can't identify scratched into the rock you're sitting on.

If you look around, you'll see others who all look just as shocked as you do.

Some sit around you on the ruins of what seems like an old building. Others stand on top of large piles of dirt, dressed in drab clothes and wide-brimmed hats. They seem human enough (if you even know what a human is).

For a second, there's shocked silence. Then, everyone seems to speak at once. You can hear their voices in your language, whatever that may be, but there's an unfamiliar rumbling beneath it, one in a language you've never heard before.

"They just appeared out of thin air--"

"Did you see that? Did you see that?!"

"What the hell just--"

"I'm calling the cops!"

"Cops? I'm calling the mayor! This is insane!"

And the people scatter, some of them on their phones, others huddled together, looking wide-eyed at the ruins where you and your fellow newbies now sit.

For now, the locals seem a bit… intimidated, so it might be best to talk to the others who are in the same boat as you.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY

Town Hall is a large, mostly empty room, save for the chairs where a crowd of people now sit. Some remain standing, staring at the new arrivals with suspicion.

At the front of the room, there's a stage. Behind the podium stands a woman with wavy brown hair and a modest suit on. She clears her throat to gather everyone's attention.

"Everyone," she says, "thank you for coming on such short notice. To our strange new arrivals -- welcome! My name is Danica Karst, and I'm the mayor here at San Benedicto. Now, I understand you're all confused and probably a little bit scared right now, but we're gonna work through it together. San Benedicto is a wonderfully welcoming city, and we'll make sure that you're taken care o--"

A loud bang of thunder cuts through the air like a hammer striking the building. It's so loud that the ground seems to shake.

And then the rain starts. It pounds the windows hard, immediately obscuring the outside world from view. If you squint, you'll be able to see the water run down the roads in a flood, tainted red with the sediment of the canyon that it sweeps away.

Mayor Karst tries to continue her speech after that -- telling the newcomers that their hotel stays will be taken care of, that they'll be given some money to spend, that they'll be able to leave the canyon soon when the roads are safe again -- but the roaring of the thunder and the flash-bang of the lightning interrupts her every few seconds.

And then the lights go out.

The emergency generators buzz on, bathing the town hall in an eerie red glow.

"Alright, folks," Mayor Karst calls out, louder now that her microphone isn't working. "We're gonna table this and hunker down until this blows over. My staff is gonna get some of the emergency cots out so you all have a place to sleep if this doesn't clear up soon. We'll bring around some coffee. Just -- play nice, okay?"

There's a rumble of agreement through the room, though the locals still by and large look untrusting.

As the chairs are pushed back and cots are rolled in, the storm continues to rage outside. The hall fills with the scent of coffee as styrofoam cups get passed around. The mayor has vanished somewhere, and so have most of her staff.

As sudden as a bolt of lightning, the generators go out, too. There's a startled cry throughout the room, but as people's eyes adjust, they quickly settle down.

You, however, might feel a creeping sensation down the back of your spine. A feeling of being watched. It's strong, borderline painful, and you're desperate to find out who's responsible.

Your eyes land on the first person nearby, and you find yourself suddenly convinced it was them. Why not go see what it is they could possibly want?

JUST BENEATH THE SKIN

After you finally manage to get to sleep, you dream.

In your dream, you feel the shuddering of an earthquake beneath you. You sit in a large, empty cave-like room, and around you, stalactites begin to crack and shatter, falling toward your prone form. They each seem to miss you, but you can't move, can't roll away.

And then, one strikes you directly in the forehead.

You wake up in a room next to someone. It's not where you went to sleep. You're standing in what appears to be a school during a dance -- streamers and banners hung up, bowls of punch on tables by the walls, balloons scattered around. You and your companion are the only two in the room.

That's when you start to change.

Your bones grinding together, muscle and sinew ripping, blood broiling under your skin like you're nothing but a tea kettle, you're filled with either agony or euphoria (or maybe even both). You can hear your partner changing, too.

Try not to look in any one of the big, out of place mirrors set up around the edges of the room. You might just dislike what you see.

BET ON ME

Well, that was a weird dream, wasn't it? When you wake up in your cot in Town Hall, you're just the same as you've always been. Isn't that a relief?

That morning, you get news. The single tunnel leading out of the canyon has collapsed in the storm. There's no other way out, they say -- climbing the canyon walls is impossible. "Bad air up there," that's what the locals will tell the newbies when pressed.

But word travels fast in the canyon, and soon, everyone is buzzing with curiosity about the new arrivals. The more obviously nonhuman you are, the more likely you are to get stopped on the street and quizzed about your home and life.

Chomping at the bit to know more about everyone, the local news station, SBBN, has reached out to the new citizens of San Benedicto. They're invited to speak with newscaster Dylan McNamara, the heartthrob and go-to person for all the city's most important news.

But this isn't an ordinary interview. Dylan likes to spice things up; it's what makes him so popular.

So, he's made the interview into a game!

The name of the game is "I Bet." How it's played is simple:

Two new arrivals sit across from each other. One starts a sentence with "I bet," and then makes an assumption about the other person. "I bet you like horror movies," "I bet you still sleep with a teddy bear," "I bet you have a deep fear of failure," whatever you want! No question is too probing.

The person being quizzed then replies with the truth, and then it's their turn to ask a question. After ten rounds, the person who got most of their assumptions correct wins a special prize: $250, and bragging rights.

Now, get assuming!
